Barbell Squats

Muscles Targeted:

  • The most important thing to remember about squats is that they are a quad focused exercise.

  • If your goals are focused more on hamstrings or glutes this should not be the basis of your workout.

Form:

  • Squats can be performed in a variety of stances but for your basic squat I like to focus on keeping my feet about shoulder width apart and pointing my toes slightly outward to avoid the knees caving in.

  • On most compound leg exercises focus on driving your knees through your toes.

  • When thinking about depth, go only as deep as you feel comfortable.

  • Keeping the spine in a neutral position is important to avoid injury. The butt wink may be fine at body weight and low loads but when increasing weight and reps the risk of injury increases.

Rep Ranges:

  • This exercise can be performed in any rep range, low reps will help increase strength and doing high volume will really transform all the muscles in your legs.
